GOALS is live, and Playorium's first GOALS tournament takes place on Saturday, August 21. Playorium Goals Night #1 kicks off at 21:00 CEST with free entry, a 1v1 double-elimination bracket, and a real stage to test your skills. Registration is open. Here's everything you need to know about GOALS before you queue up.
What is GOALS?
GOALS is a free-to-play football game from Swedish studio Goals AB. Built in Unreal Engine 5, it is available on Windows PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with cross-play support.
The game follows a gameplay-first approach: responsive inputs, no interference, and no scripted outcomes. The studio sums it up as "No scripts, just football." Matches are decided solely by what players do on the pitch.
Every player card is a unique entity. Cards progress, age, reach their performance peak, and may eventually retire, meaning squads continually evolve over time.
At launch on June 4, GOALS focused on 1v1 play across several modes, including Ranked, weekly Knockout, bracket-style Tournaments, Quickplay, Friendlies, Practice Arena, Practice Scenarios, and Bot Practice.
TL;DR:
- Free-to-play football from Goals AB on Windows PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
- A gameplay-first system built around responsive inputs and no scripted outcomes.
- Unique player cards that progress, age, peak, and may eventually retire.
Patch 1.02.01: 5v5 is here
The official patch notes introduce two ways to play 5v5. Quickplay uses matchmaking for 10-player games, while Lobby Mode lets squads create private sessions using invite codes.
Squad leaders now manage setup through the new Social Menu, where they can send the group into matchmaking or launch a lobby. Automatic bot fills are disabled, and the "Any" option is off by default, ensuring every slot on the pitch is filled by a human player.
The patch adds 36 challenges exclusive to 5v5, a reorganized quick-chat radial with tactical options, a post-pause countdown, and a toggle for visual feedback on pass targeting.
Balance changes affect sprint speed penalties, manual defending turn penalties, goalkeeper reaction times, the shoulder barge radius, and the guaranteed tackle range, which has been reduced by half. Together, these adjustments reward careful positioning over brute force in defending and tackling.
The update follows other summer improvements. Patch 1.01.05, released on July 23, added the Center Forward position along with the 4-3-3 Build-Up and 4-2-3-1 Wide formations. A separate July update removed tackles from behind and improved passing lane detection.
TL;DR:
- 5v5 is available through Quickplay matchmaking or private Lobby Mode.
- The patch adds 36 5v5 challenges alongside several communication and feedback updates.
- Balance changes affect sprinting, defending, goalkeeping, shoulder barges, and tackles.
